On the morning of January 12, Professor Joe M. Regenstein from Cornell University, USA, was invited to the College of Food Science and delivered two special lectures entitled “Publishing a Peer-Review Paper” and “Total Utilization of Fish Waste” in the lecture hall of No. 39 Teaching Building. The event was hosted by Professor Zhao Guohua, Dean of the College of Food Science. Key faculty members including Professor He Zhifei and Professor Ding Xiaowen, together with graduate student representatives, attended the lecture.

The lecture consisted of two sessions. At the beginning of the first session themed on academic paper publication, Professor Regenstein vividly illustrated that writing a scientific paper is essentially telling a rigorous academic story. Targeting common problems existing in Chinese students’ SCI manuscript writing, he systematically sorted out typical errors and avoidance methods in SCI paper writing from the perspectives of journal selection, writing specifications and skills for each paper section, and core data processing, while providing practical ideas for research topic selection.Professor Regenstein pointed out that research topics should be based on international academic frontiers and break through regional research limitations. Only by aligning research with global academic standards can research achievements be recognized by scholars worldwide. Meanwhile, academic papers should focus on core research highlights, abandon empty and redundant expressions, fully and concretely present the innovation and academic value of research, and clearly explain the research importance and social benefits, which can significantly improve the acceptance rate of manuscripts.

In the interactive session, Professor Regenstein answered teachers’ and students’ questions concerning scientific research and paper writing one by one in detail. After a short break, in the second session, he shared the latest research achievements and progress of his team in the field of aquatic product processing. By comparing the utilization status of fish by-products in China and Western countries, he systematically expounded the comprehensive utilization approaches of various fish processing by-products, and innovatively introduced the inflatable air bag product developed from fish by-products, which greatly broadened the scientific research vision and innovative thinking of the attendees.

After the lecture, Professor Zhao Guohua, Dean of the College of Food Science, presented the appointment certificate to Professor Joe M. Regenstein, officially appointing him as a Visiting Professor of the College of Food Science, Southwest University. All participating teachers and students stated that they had gained abundant professional knowledge and profound insights. The lecture clarified the key and difficult points of SCI paper writing and academic writing specifications, enabled participants to keep abreast of the international cutting-edge research trends in food science, and provided innovative ideas and solid guidance for future scientific research.

Professor Joe M. Regenstein is currently an Emeritus Professor of Food Science at Cornell University, USA,formerAdjunct Professor at Kansas State University, and was appointed as a foreign visiting professor at Jiangnan University in 2014. He served as the first Congressional Science Fellow of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) in Washington, D.C., and has worked as a columnist for KASHRUS Magazine for many years. His main research fields include shelf-life preservation technology for fresh and frozen fish, resource utilization of livestock, poultry and aquatic processing wastes, etc. He has received numerous authoritative international awards, including the Earl P. McFee Award of the Atlantic Fisheries Technology Conference, the Elizabeth Steele Humanitarian Award, and the 2015 IFT BorS.Luh International Award, with profound academic attainments.
