Establishment of China-Hungary Fruit Wine and Brandy Research Laboratory in Southwest University

In 2020, amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, economic and trade exchanges between China and Hungary achieved growth against the trend. Meanwhile, the food science cooperation and research mechanism between Southwest University and Hungary witnessed continuous innovation.

Guided by China’s Belt and Road Initiative and Hungary’s Opening to the East policy, theChinese-Hungarian Cooperative Research Center for Food Scienceof Southwest University jointly established the Southwest University China-Hungary Fruit Wine and Brandy Research Laboratory with InWest-China Group. The inauguration ceremony was held in a hybrid online-offline format on February 1, 2021. The laboratory aims to carry out joint applied research and development of brandy brewing and blending technologies, promote vocational education and training cooperation, and advance the implementation and development of the fruit wine and brandy industry in Chongqing and across China.

The inauguration ceremony was hosted by Zhang Jun, Deputy Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange of Southwest University. Ni Jiupai, Deputy Director of the Science and Technology Department, and Zeng Liang, Vice Dean of the College of Food Science, delivered congratulatory speeches respectively. Kan Jianquan, Second-level Professor and Director of theChinese-Hungarian Cooperative Research Center for Food Science, together with Dióssi Lóránd, Chairman of InWest-China Group and former Consul GeneralofHungaryin Chongqing, jointly announced the official establishment of the laboratory and signed the cooperation agreement.

Luo Qing, Person-in-charge of the Science and Technology Section of the Chinese Embassy in Hungary, Kada Gergely,Consul GeneralofHungaryin Chongqing, Li Hai, Deputy Director of Chongqing High-tech Entrepreneurship Center and Director of the China-Hungary Technology Transfer Center, and Dr. Nora Kisbocskói, Director of the Food Research Institute of HungarianNational AgriculturalRerearch andInnovation Centre, attended the ceremony online and delivered congratulatory remarks. Dr. Ferenc Hegyi, the firstTalented Young Scientist Program (TYSP) fellowof the university,Dr. Zsolt Zalán, host of the key China-Hungary R&D project, and the research team of theCenter witnessed the founding of the laboratory together. All participants also attended a fruit wine and brandy tasting session.

Officially established in May 2017, theChinese-Hungarian Cooperative Research Center for Food Sciencehas carried out fruitful and pragmatic cooperation with HungarianNational AgriculturalResearch andInnovation Centre. To date, the center has undertaken 8 intergovernmental cooperation projects between China and Hungary. Researchers from both sides have published more than 40 academic papers under the name of the center. It has won 1 First Prize of the Ministry of Education Technical Invention Award, cultivated the university’s firstTalented Young Scientist Program (TYSP) fellow, held 1 international training program, signed 6 scientific and technological cooperation agreements, and participated in 7 China-Hungary cultural and foreign exchange activities. As a model platform for international scientific research cooperation of Southwest University, its research achievements have been highly recognized by Jiangxiaobai, a well-known liquor enterprise in Chongqing. To promote the industrial transformation of cooperative research achievements, the center has jointly built the industry-university-research platform of the China-Hungary Fruit Wine and Brandy Research Laboratory with InWest-China Ltd. The platform will continue to carry out in-depth cooperative research in food science and technology, food safety monitoring and other fields, improve the quality and efficiency of China-Hungary people-to-people exchanges and scientific and technological cooperation, and contribute to people-to-people bonds and product connectivity among countries along the Belt and Road.
